(a) Constructivism and the new NCERT
National Curriculum:
The new national curriculum framework of the
NCERT requires teachers to follow a constructivist teaching
approach. What is constructivist learning? How should theories of
Constructivist learning be applied in our classroom? What does
research tell us about how the brain learns? Strategies for
improving students retention and attention.
(b) Understanding by Design and
Differentiation:
How can we teach children of different levels,
with different learning styles within the same classroom? How should
we plan lessons for different levels? How do we use an Understanding
By Design model for planning?
(c) Assessment:
Reviewing formative and summative assessment in
practice. How to make assessment into an effective learning tool as
well as an effective feedback tool.
(d) IT for student learning:
How can the use of ICT promote learning? Subject
specific areas for creating independent learners.
(e) Gender and Learning:
Do boys and girls learn differently? What must
teachers be aware of, to develop an effective learning atmosphere in
their classroom? What effect does gender have on behaviour and
discipline?
(f) UbD, Curriculum Maps and Effective
Lesson Planning:
Effective lesson planning promotes raised
standards by aligning lesson objectives with resources and
instructional strategies. This programme for teachers and school
Principals and Vice Principals, develops an understanding of how a
whole-school programme defines lesson objectives and the ways in
which efficient lesson plan formats can strengthen this. It promotes
a cross-curricular approach to lesson planning, for use in both
primary and secondary schools. |

(g) Teacher Professional Development:
It is widely recognised that the heart of an
effective school is effective teachers. But how does a school go
about developing teacher effectiveness? What should be a school's
policy for professional development? How should a teacher appraisal
process be structured? What are the financial implications of a
strong staff development policy? This is an essential workshop for
Vice Principals, Principals and School Owners/Management.

(h) Creating Effective Heads of
Department:
An effective middle management structure
promotes an effective learning programme. What is the role of a Head
of Department? What are the strategies by which Heads of Department
review and support the work happening in their department?
(i) International Education Programmes:
An introduction to the curriculum design and
learning expectation of the International Baccalaureate program, the
British A Level programme and the International General Certificate
of Secondary Education (IGCSE) programme. A review of resources and
learning areas.
(j) Teaching Approaches to the new NCERT
curriculum:
In 2006, the NCERT introduced new textbooks for
classes 6, 9 and 11 as well as 1-3 in some subject areas. In 2007,
books for classes 7, 10 and 12 will be introduced. These textbooks
promote a new role for classroom teachers. Writers of the textbooks
for specific subjects will run workshops on how to best approach the
new textbooks to promote student learning and ensure success. (This
is not available as an in-school programme) |
